Children

The Museum Corner, an interactive exhibit space located in the Children’s Department at the Centereach building, is a specially designed area that features changing hands-on exhibits and programs for children and their families. To enhance the museum experience, vast opportunities for creative expression and intellectual exploration are provided – props for dress-up, science experiments, historical artifacts and art activities. The Museum Corner invites visits by families, schools & community groups to explore, experience, share and create in a safe, fun environment.

Current Exhibit: Outdoor Adventure

Outdoor Adventure, is focused on the great outdoors with a focus on Long Island camping, hiking, fishing and paddling. Take an indoor hike and learn how to read a trail map, follow trail markers and use a field guide. Enjoy family time at the “MCPL Campground” featuring a real tent, kayaks, a simulated fire pit and more!

Upcoming Museum Corner Programs:

Pounded Nature Prints – Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM: For teens entering 6th – 12th grade. Use your muscles to create art by hammering flowers and leaves on paper. Art prints can then be made into bookmarks.

International Museum Day –  Thursday, May 16, 2024 at 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM: For all. Join us for our annual festival celebrating Museum Day. Representatives from many local museums, historical societies, science and nature centers will be on hand to share information regarding their collections, programs and exhibits!

Wiggly Worms – Wednesday, May 22, 2024 22: For children in K – 5th grade. Become an animal behaviorist as you design a respectful, animal friendly environment for earthworms and observe their reactions in this program from Long Island Explorium museum. Use this information to explore what items in the habitat make the earthworms most comfortable.

Mysteries of Owls – Saturday, June 15, 2024: For parents/caregivers with children in K – 5th grade. Owls have always been fascinating and mysterious to people. This presentation will reveal some of the wondrous adaptations these creatures have for surviving under the cloak of darkness. Come and see a Great Horned, a Screech, a Barred Owl, and a daytime bird of prey.
