John Hoctor has served on the Middle Country Library Board since December 1998. As an active board member, he has overseen the expansion of both buildings and has supported the evolution of the library into the nationally recognized institution that it is today. In the mid-1990s, Mr. Hoctor founded the Friends of the Middle Country Public Library and within the first two years, its membership grew to 150 individuals. Mr. Hoctor was a soccer coach for over 15 years in the Middle Country Youth Association, volunteered at the Stony Brook University Hospital and started a neighborhood watch group. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a New York fireman in Engine Company 71 in the South Bronx and a community relations representative for Newsday. He also received a Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies from Stony Brook University. Mr. Hoctor and his wife Barbara raised their three children in the community and have resided in Centereach for the past 50 years. Currently, they enjoy spending time with their 7 grandchildren.
